Glen Affric (National Nature Reserve)

Home to one of Scotland's largest ancient pinewoods, and an array of typical highland wildlife including golden eagle, pine marten, capercaillie, otters and red-throated divers.

Handa Island

Near Scourie

 

Offshore island, reknowned for its sea cliffs teeming with nearly 200,000 breeding sea birds. Visit between April and September to see the sea birds, also wild flowers during the summer months. Access is by small boat from Tarbet - check website carefully before going for times and fares. No ferry on Sundays.

Isle of Eigg

Near Mallaig

 

Three areas of this beautiful island are established SWT Reserves. Habitats include woodland, moorland, raised bog and willow & hazel scrub. Best to visit during the summer for the flowers, butterflies, marine life and birds. Access is by CalMac ferry from Mallaig all year round, or during the summer months a service is provided by Arisaig Marine.

Loch Fleet (SWT Reserve)

Golspie, Sutherland

 

Tidal basin with mudflats, heath, dunes and pine woodland. Visit all year round for seald, waders and ducks. Summer also sees wild flowers, terns, waders, fishing osprey and butterflies, whilst the winter months bring wild fowl, hen harriers and peregrines.

Sited within the Abernethy Forest National Nature Reserve is the Osprey Centre, which overlooks the osprey nest by Loch Garten. Facilities include the visitor centre, toilets, guided walks plus the famous "nest camera". Well worth a visit for all ages.

Rum (National Nature Reserve)

Reknowned for its stunning landscape, archeological sites and wildlife, Rum is well worth making the effort to visit. Around a third of the worlds population of manx shearwaters nest here in a unique mountain-top colony.
