Nature Reserves, Museums and Tourist Attractions in South West Scotland
Ayr
Gorge Woodlands (Scottish Wildlife Trust Reserve) |
The steep sides of this river valley ravine have enabled native woodland to develop relatively undisturbed. The prolific bird life, rare flowering plants, bats and mammals make this one of the most important woodland areas in Ayrshire. |
Further information is available on the Scottish Wildlife Trust website. |
Falls of Clyde (Scottish Wildlife Trust Reserve and National Nature Reserve) |
The reserve covers 59 hectares of woodland along the River Clyde Gorge. The visitor centre has interactive displays, wildlife CCTV, a living "bee tree" and a gift shop. Key wildlife species include peregrine falcons, sparrowhawks, bats, otters, badgers, kingfishers and tawny owls. |
See the Scottish Wildlife Trust website for more information about the Falls of Clyde Visitor Centre and the SNH website about the National Nature Reserve. |
The
Cumbernauld Greenspaces |
Within Cumbernauld a network of woodlands and green areas have been brought under the management of the Scottish Wildlife Trust to create a diverse network of native woodland with open access for
recreational and educational use. Footpaths have been improved and use made of natural corridors to link different communities within the town. The main green spaces are Cumbernauld Glen, Northside Wood, Luggiebank and Forest Wood. |
More information is available about Cumbernauld Glen (SWT website), and Cumbernauld House Park. |
Knowetop
Lochs (Scottish Wildlife Trust) |
The heather moorland, willow scrub, birch woodland and marsh are the location of the two small lochs. Dragonflies and wetland plants make the site of special interest, as well as bird species. |
More information on Knowetop Lochs is available on the Scottish Wildlife Trust website. |
Caerlaverock Wetland Centre (Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust) |
The visitor centre and reserve provide a great day out for families, with osprey and barn owl CCTV during the summer, and the spectacular flocks of Barnacle Geese and Whooper Swans during the winter. There are regular events all year round, hids, an observatory and even overnight accommodation for visitors. |
Detailed information about the centre and reserve is available on the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust website. |
